One Channel Vintage Style Compressor /Leveler.
The COMP-2A is a one channel vintage style Compressor / Leveler using vacuum tubes in the signal and side-chain path. The input and output is transformer balanced, using two different transformers, each one optimized for its purpose. This is the way audio components were built before transistors and integrated circuits became available.
Integrated circuits are small and cheap and widely used in most modern designs. The drawback is that audio components built with modern technology doesn´t always provide the best perceived sound quality or the type of character that the modern user desires. The subjective sound quality delivered by vintage equipment is often preferred over the one delivered by modern units, a situation that is even more obvious now when music is recorded with clean-sounding digital audio equipment.
"So, should you buy a Golden Age Project Comp-2A? No... you should buy two! OK, I write that half in jest, but for the money it really is that good. If you know you want an LA-2A-style hardware compressor and have the money available, I sincerely doubt that you’d regret investing in one (or a pair) of these. Not only does it behave and sound very much like the real thing, but the fussier amongst you are catered for by the ability to upgrade the stock tubes. It’s also stylish and, importantly, it seems to have been built to last. Recommended."
- Sound On Sound
"For general signal levelling, though, this unit excels – especially on vocal and bass tracks, where incorrectly set response times can ruin the sound. The unit’s fit-and-forget nature is most welcome when a job needs to be done swiftly without having to worry about setting attack and release times and selecting the right ratio. The Comp-2A gets on with it, as only opto-compressors of this type can. It does all the hard work so you don’t have to. Highly recommended. 9/10 & Value Award"
