Room sound is second only to performance.

The biggest obstacle to overcome when recording is a bad room sound.  The best performance and the best mic will sound like a mess in a uncontrolled room.  Putting egg cartons, mattresses, blankets and carpet on the walls are myths, and typically do more damage than good!

The real issues is in the bass and lower mid frequencies.  You need a high density material to absorb those lows, and by default, will take care of the high frequencies as well!  The answer is Rockwool - The stuff used on process equipment, vessels, tanks and reactors to reduce the noise emitted.
