HOME RECORDING STUDIO CHECKLIST
What do I need for starting a home recording studio?
1. Computer
Almost any old desktop or laptop should do the job.
2. Recording software (DAW)
To work on your sounds into songs.
3. Audio Interface
To capture and reproduce your music in high quality.
4. Real acoustic treatment
To help your not-studio-space sound like a studio space.
5. Studio quality microphone
To capture live sounds like voice, drums, guitars etc.
6. Microphone stand
To keep your mic in one place.
7. Microphone cable
To connect your gear.
8. Pop filter
To reduce bursts of air hitting the microphone.
9. Studio quality headphones
To listen to your music while you mix and record.
10. Training and support
To get the basics right, all this gear is useless unless you know how to use it correctly.
BUYER BEWARE
Sadly the home recording industry seems to be built on making money out of musicians trust.
How often have you brought an instrument or piece of recording gear only to find you still need to spend $50-$200+ before you can use it correctly?
Please reference this list BEFORE purchasing any other “Complete studio bundles” sold in retailers and online.
If they are missing any of these items, then the ticketed price is not all you will end up paying. If you need to add a microphone stand, a pop filter and some acoustic treatment, then you will need to spend a couple of hundred dollars extra after the fact!
Can I buy some now and the rest later?
A mistake of people setting up their first home studio (or long time home recordists who can’t get good results) is skipping things like real acoustic treatment, a pop filter, and a microphone stand.
CAUTION
Skipping a pop filter will drive you nuts dealing with the bursts of air in vocal recordings.
Skipping a microphone stand is just silly!
Skipping real acoustic treatment is what makes home recordings sound like home recordings!
People find acoustics difficult to grasp, so they tend to ignore it and hope it goes away.
But it doesn't.
Don’t waste time with blankets, acoustic foam and egg cartons.
If you have carpet, some furniture, curtains, and your body in the room most of the high frequencies will be sorted.
The real issue is the low and mid frequencies which pass straight through most household materials including beds, sofas, blankets, foam and mattresses. They also bounce off high density solid objects like concrete and brick walls.
SOLUTION
Real acoustic treatment must be super dense like rock, but not solid like rock.
The stuff I use to control my home studio is Rockwool - Yep, wool made out of rock! It’s the stuff used to wrap industrial processing machines, tanks and other super loud sources. It absorbs low and mid frequencies and as a bonus takes care of a little more of the high end. 1-3 x 50mm thick rockwool panels around whatever you are recording will help you compete with pro studio results.

I have created complete studio bundles which contain all the items listed above.
